Cumberland ignored the threat of the woods when drawing up his battle plans, and instead concentrated on seizing the town of Fontenoy and attacking the main French army nearby.

Despite a concerted Anglo-Hanoverian attack on the French centre, which led many to believe the Allies had won, the failure to clear the woods and of the Dutch forces to capture Fontenoy forced Cumberland's force onto the retreat.

Following the battle Cumberland was frequently criticised for his tactics, particularly the failure to occupy the woods. His appointment was popular, and caused morale to soar amongst the public and troops loyal to King George.

Recalled from Flanders , Cumberland proceeded with preparations for quelling the Stuart Jacobite uprising. The Jacobite army had advanced southwards into England, hoping that English Jacobites would rise and join them.

However, after receiving only limited support such as the Manchester Regiment , the followers of Charles decided to withdraw to Scotland.

Cumberland joined the Midland army under Ligonier , and began pursuit of the enemy, as the Stuarts retreated northwards from Derby.

Arriving in Edinburgh on 30 January , he at once proceeded in search of Charles. He made a detour to Aberdeen , [28] where he spent some time training the well-equipped forces now under his command for the next stage of the conflict in which they were about to engage.

On 8 April , he set out from Aberdeen for Inverness , and, on 16 April, he fought the decisive Battle of Culloden , in which the Stuart forces were completely destroyed.

His troops traversed the battlefield and stabbed any of the rebel soldiers who were still alive.

The British Army then embarked upon the so-called 'pacification' of Jacobite areas of the Highlands. All those the troops believed to be 'rebels' were killed, as were non-combatants; 'rebellious' settlements were burned and livestock was confiscated on a large scale.

Following Culloden, Cumberland was nicknamed "Sweet William" by his Whig supporters and "The Butcher" by his Tory opponents [32] the latter being a taunt first recorded in the City of London [33] and used for political purposes in England.

Cumberland's own brother, the Prince of Wales who had been refused permission to take a military role on his father's behalf , seems to have encouraged the virulent attacks upon the Duke.

Cumberland preserved the strictest discipline in his camp. He was inflexible in the execution of what he deemed to be his duty, without favour to any man.

In only a few cases he exercised his influence in favour of clemency. The Duke took no part in the Flanders campaign of , during which the French made huge advances capturing Brussels and defeating the Allies at Rocoux.

Cumberland's unpopularity, which had steadily increased since Culloden, interfered greatly with his success in politics, and when the death of the Prince of Wales brought the latter's son , a minor, next in succession to the throne, the Duke was not able to secure for himself the contingent regency.

Whilst in the office of Commander-in-Chief Cumberland attempted to reform the peacetime army with the support of his father.

He wished to wrest control over promotions from the government to the army itself and to limit or curtail the practise of purchase.

Cumberland further wished to create a special standing force which could be quickly deployed overseas in time of crisis. Critics such as Horace Walpole argued the institution of purchase was one of the safeguards of parliamentary sovereignty against Royalist insurrection.

In , the simmering colonial rivalry between Britain and France over competing territorial claims in North America developed into war.

France asserted its claim to Ohio Valley by building a network of powerful fortifications. The government ministry led by Newcastle initially proposed a limited military response in which a Highland regiment supported by colonial forces would drive the French from the Ohio Valley.

In his role as army Commander-in-Chief, Cumberland advised on the conduct of the war in North America. He believed the war should be principally conducted by the colonies themselves and that regular troops should only play a supporting role.

In , the war having spread to the continent, Cumberland was placed at the head of the Hanoverian Army of Observation , intended to defend Hanover of which George II was Elector from a French invasion.

Within a short time discipline had collapsed, and Cumberland's army headed northwards in total disorder.

Cumberland hoped that the Royal Navy might bring him reinforcements and supplies which would allow him to regroup and counterattack, but the British mounted an expedition to Rochefort instead, despite suggestions that it should be sent to aid Cumberland.

By September Cumberland and his forces had retreated to the fortified town of Stade on the North Sea coast.

The King gave him discretionary powers to negotiate a separate peace. On Cumberland's return to London, he was treated badly by his father, despite the fact that he had previously been given permission to negotiate such an agreement.

When they met, George II remarked "Here is my son who has ruined me and disgraced himself". Cumberland's final years were lived out during the first years of the reign of his nephew, George III , who acceded to the throne on the death of William's father on 25 October Cumberland became a very influential advisor to the King and was instrumental in establishing the First Rockingham Ministry.

After the dissolution of the Seven and the death of Homelander, Billy continued to kill supes including his friends who took Compound V.

When his teammate Mother's Milk found out about this, he fought him, trying to stop him. The Butcher finally ended the fight, putting a grenade in his mouth.

Then Billy planted a bomb in their base. When the Frenchman and The Female discovered the bomb, it was too late to defuse it, and then the bomb exploded, killing them both.

Billy's hate for Supes has been fueled by his personal hate for Homelander , leader of The Seven, following the alleged death of his wife Becca Butcher.

Billy believed that Homelander was the reason she disappeared, presuming that he killed her, fueling a personal vendetta that would last the next eight years.

Unbeknownst to Billy, Becca had been placed into witness protection by Vought International having been pregnant and given birth to Homelander's child — a child with enhanced abilities, including Homelander's heat vision.

Billy is a rather gruff, striking and charming man of tall stature and toned physique who also looks rather unkempt. His hair is that of a thick, black greasy tuft on his head and he also has a prominent beard.

The Tammany Hall gang were also actively protecting Irish voters from Poole's gang, Bowery Boys, who he sent out to beat them up as a way to prevent them from registering.

He was also active in the Know Nothings political movement, which was an American nativist political party. The purpose of the political party, according to the New Orleans True Delta , was "twofold — part religious, part political; and the ends aimed at the disenfranchisement of adopted citizens, and their exclusion from office, and perpetual war upon the Catholic religion.

And there were specific qualification that must be met to gain membership in the Know Nothing political party.

One, the person applying for entry must "be a native born citizen, of native born parents and not of the Catholic religion". As a well-known gang leader and pugilist , Poole was frequently involved in fights, brawls, and other confrontations.

A Brutal Outrage in Broadway. We learn that at an early hour yesterday morning, two noted pugilists entered Florence's Hotel, corner of Broadway and Howard street, and without any provocation seized the bar-keeper and beat his face to a jelly.

It appears that Thomas Hyer , William Poole , and several others entered the above hotel, and while one of the party held Charles Owens the bar-keeper by the hair of his head, another of the gang beat him in the face to such an extent that his left eye was completely ruined and the flesh of his cheek mangled in the most shocking manner.

After thus accomplishing the heartless act, all of them made an effort to find Mr. John Florence, the proprietor of the hotel, with a view of serving him in the same manner, but not succeeding in their latter design, they found the hat of Mr.

Florence and wantonly cut it into strips, and trampled it under their feet. The desperadoes then left the house, and in the meantime Mr.

Owens was placed under medical attendance, and in the course of a short time he proceeded to the Jefferson Market Police, in company with Mr.

Florence, where they made their affidavits respecting the inhuman outrage, upon which Justice Blakeley issued his warrants for Hyer, Poole , and such of the others who were concerned in the affair, and the same were placed in the hands of officer Baldwin for service.

Since the above was written we have been reliably informed that the affray originated from the fact of the barkeeper having refused them drinks, after they had been furnished with them twice in succession.

Poole's arch rival, John Morrissey , was an Irish immigrant and worked for the political machine at Tammany Hall. Morrissey was also a popular bare-knuckle boxer and challenged Poole to a match.

Though the two men were of differing ethnic backgrounds and political parties, the initial grounds for their dispute may have arisen from an earlier bet by Poole on a boxing match at Boston Corners on October 12, , in which Poole had placed his bet on Morrissey's opponent, " Yankee Sullivan ".

The results of the boxing match were disputed, and Poole was against Morrissey being paid. In a fight was arranged between Morrissey and Poole, which Poole won.

Morrissey plotted revenge and on February 25, , Lewis Baker and Jim Turner , friends of Morrissey, shot Poole in the leg at Stanwix Hall, a bar on Broadway near Prince, at that time a center of the city's nightlife.

Broadway, in the vicinity of Prince and Houston Streets, was the scene of an exciting shooting affair about 1 o'clock yesterday morning, which is but a repetition of a similar occurrence that transpired a few weeks ago under Wallack's Theatre between Tom Hyer, Lewis Baker, Jim Turner and several other noted pugilists View Full Article at Wikisource.

Several days after the shooting, on March 8, , Poole died in his home on Christopher Street at the age of Poole was survived by his wife and son, Charles Poole.

A local newsman reported Poole's last words were, "Good-bye boys; I die a true American.
